Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic Pancreatitis results due to recurrent inflammation of the pancreas resulting in scarring of the pancreatic tissue.

 

Signs and symptoms of pancreatitis may vary, depending on which type you experience.

 

Chronic pancreatitis signs and symptoms include:

  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Abdominal pain that feels worse after eating
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Oily, smelly stools (steatorrhea)

Complications of Chronic pancreatitis

  • Pseudocyst of Pancreas – pancreatic ascites
  • Endocrine insufficiency – development of Diabetes, due to poor insulin production from the damaged pancreas
  • Exocrine insufficiency – decreased pancreatic enzyme secretion, resulting in maldigestion, fatty stools, weight loss

Management:

  • Chronic pancreatitis can be managed medically, for mild pain, endocrine and exocrine insufficiency require supplements.
  • Constant and chronic pain would be benefited with surgery.
  • Pancreatic ascites resulting due to leak from Pancreatic duct would require either ERCP or surgery for resolution
  • Chronic pancreatitis with biliary obstruction might require Endoscopic therapy ERCP or Surgical option based on the patient symptoms.
